Not Making Enough Money On Squidoo…..
…then I am going to suggest you take a good long hard look at your lenses!
Why?
Well let me start by telling you what I see happen most paydays on Squidoo. Payday normally happens around the 11th of the month on Squidoo and always causes some excitement in the forums! It is when they pay out the monies from the community pool together with any royalties you may have received on your lenses for the month which is being paid.
The excitement mounts and then the posts start about “disappointing month” or “not made as much as I wanted to” and others along a similar line.
From time to time I have taken a look at the lenses of those that make those sort of comments and I have to say that their disappointment was fairly predictable! Why? Because they don’t make lenses that are geared towards generating sales of things that people want to buy.
Let’s look at some of the main ways you can make money on Squidoo:
1. Through a share of the community pool – this includes the Tier payments and also the separate InfoLinks Tier payments. Unless you have a substantial number of lenses in the Top 2000 lenses then this is relatively minimal and below the Top 20,000 is something like $0.08 per lens.
2. Through the royalties earned on your lenses via the Amazon Modules and other similar modules where you make sales of products. This can generate quite a reasonable amount of income if you do it in a way which engages the reader and leads them into a buying state of mind!
3. Through the promotion of appropriate, relevant products from other affiliate networks such as ShareASale, Commission Junction, AffiliateEco etc etc. Again this can generate a good amount of income by careful and appropriate product placement – in fact this is where I make the majority of my money through Squidoo.
Now before anyone runs away with the idea that I am suggesting that you build what I lovingly term “spammy/scammy” type lenses – I am not, not now, not ever – from my time as a Squid Angel I can tell you that spammy/scammy lenses are the bain of our lives – the get rich quick, make a million whilst the coffee is brewing type ebooks and programmes should be avoided like the plague!
But what I am saying is that if you are not making lenses that sell things then you are not going to make that much money! It’s quite simple really:
Again let me emphasise that I am not for one minute suggesting that you make only sales lenses. Squidoo is a rich mixture of wonderful lenses on a massive range of topics and we all want it to remain that way and not become nothing more than Virtual Shopping Experience – what I believe is called a Virtual Mall!
Let’s take a look at the type of lenses that I build – as you will have seen I make quite a diverse range of them:
Type 1. Informative lenses about subjects I am passionate about.
Type 2. Informative Lenses that support causes I am trying to promote or support
Type 3. Community led lenses which I provide for other members to add their links to
Type 4. Informative lenses which provide products and solutions to visitors
Type 5. Lenses which support other lenses I have built but are more or less product led
Now which of the lenses do you think do well? They all do! But in different ways.
Type 1, 2 and 3 lenses tend to rank well under the Squidoo Lensranking because they get lots of visitors from within Squidoo who give them “stars” or favourite them or from time to time they are blessed by Squid Angels or Purple Stars.
Type 4 and 5 lenses – well they are the ones that make me money! Often they never get a single star rating by a Squidoo Member, they never get blessed and never receive a purple star! But they make me money because they are targetted at a niche market that wants to buy!
Let me give you an example of how you can mix Type 1 – 5 lenses around a niche. I glanced at one of our bookshelves as I am writing this and saw The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and I am going to use that as an example. Let’s see if we can make a mixture of the various types of lenses.
Now I have just fired up my favourite Keyword Research Tool (Micro Niche Finder) and tapped in Lord of the Rings to see what people are searching for online!
People do a lot of searches for information about the Lord of the Rings and you could build a variety of lenses about the various aspects of the books and movies. But let’s look at what people are looking to buy:
Lord of the Rings Action Figures – 14,000 searches and only 11 well optimised sites competing
Lord of the Rings DVDs and – 5,400 searches and only 1 well optiimised site competing
Lord of the Rings Games – 12,100 searches and only 22 well optmised sites competing
…and so the list goes on! You could build a range of lenses around those specific search terms, which given how well Squidoo Lenses perform, could easily compete and get on the first pages of search results. Lots of Amazon products that could be dropped into those lenses alongside other affiliate programmes.
So you see, as I said earlier, I am not encouraging you to only build sales lenses, nor am I suggesting that you build something that you would not be comfortable with. BUT…if you want to make money on Squidoo you ahve to make lenses that sell products.
Finally, let me encourage you to look at your lenses as I did at the outset of this post. Which type of lens are they? Is there the potential to rebuild or to build new and complimentary ones in the niches that you want to work in that actually sell things.
